Dr. J. Steven Picou, Professor of Sociology and Chair of the Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Social Work at the University of South Alabama.

In 2001, Dr. Picou was the recipient of the "Distinguished Contribution Award" presented by the Environment and Technology section of the American Sociological Association for his research and design of programmatic intervention strategies to facilitate community recovery from the long-term psychosocial impacts of the Exxon Valdez disaster in Prince William Sound, Alaska.

The Exxon Valdez Oil Spill contaminated 1,500 miles of coastal lands and over 10,000 square miles of ocean. Communities throughout southcentral Alaska have been affected.
